Bioactive Setups

Bring the enclosure to life

A bioactive enclosure uses natural substrate, live plants and clean-up crew to create a living system designed around the animal’s needs.

What is a bioactive setup?

Unlike a basic enclosure using artificial decoration and disposable substrate, a bioactive setup contains living components that work together. A properly designed system can include drainage and substrate layers, live plants, leaf litter, bark, natural wood, isopods, springtails, suitable lighting, heating, humidity control, hides and climbing structure.

What does it do?

The clean-up crew feeds on decaying plant material, shed skin and small amounts of organic waste. Live plants use nutrients from the substrate while providing cover, climbing opportunities and a more natural environment.

A bioactive enclosure still requires spot cleaning, monitoring and maintenance. It is a managed living system, not a self-cleaning enclosure.

Bioactive compared with a traditional setup

Bioactive enclosure

  • More natural appearance and enrichment.
  • Live plants provide cover and climbing structure.
  • Clean-up crew helps process suitable organic material.
  • Can support humidity and natural behaviour.
  • Develops into a living display.
  • Substrate usually requires less frequent complete replacement once properly established.

Traditional enclosure

  • Usually cheaper and quicker to establish.
  • Artificial plants and replaceable substrate are easier to control.
  • Waste removal is handled entirely by the keeper.
  • Often better for quarantine and some medical situations.
  • Lower risk of plants or clean-up crew failing.
  • Can be more appropriate for species that do not suit bioactive conditions.

Honest advice

Bioactive is not automatically suitable for every animal or enclosure. It costs more initially, takes time to establish and requires the correct drainage, lighting, substrate, plants and clean-up crew. Bio Forest will say when a traditional setup is the safer or more practical option.

Bio Forest setup service

Every setup should be designed around the animal—not simply made to look attractive. When requesting help, provide the species, enclosure dimensions, current equipment, available space, preferred appearance, budget and whether you need a full build or advice only.
